Principal's Message

Principal Floyd Montiel
Dear Marshfield Junior High Community,

Welcome to the Home of the Buccaneers!

Needless to say, 2020 has provided us all many challenges. This transition to a different form of education certainly adds to the list.  In addition to that, it is also a very interesting time to begin the process of transitioning to a new school.  Regardless, we can learn from the past and through perseverance and a bit of hard work, we find a way to evolve.

Due to the COVID 19 metrics set by the Governor’s Office and the Oregon Health Authority, the Coos Bay School District will begin the school year at grades 4-12 in a Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) format.  Due to this change and the need for further training of our school staff, the school year calendar has been adjusted.  The first day of CDL classes will now be Monday, September 14th.  When the metrics for our county are met, we at MJHS have planned for and are ready to return to school following an AM/PM Hybrid Model.  During the week of 9/8-9/11, staff will be connecting with families in a preconference.  Schedules will also be distributed during that week with an explanation of how CDL and the school day will function.  Further information pertaining to the start of the school year including registration and full-time online education can be found on the district website as well as the MJHS webpage and Facebook page.

The Class of 2026 and myself are fortunate to have a dedicated team of teachers and support staff working with us as we begin the 2020-2021 school year.  District staff have been working through the summer to prepare for September and training will continue upon staff returning to the building on August 31st.  Last Spring was reactive and emergency education and we understand it didn’t work well for many.   We want you to know that the CDL plan will provide a well thought out system that strives for equity and includes accountability as one of it’s pillars.  We know there will be setbacks and frustrations, but there will also be successes and reasons to celebrate.  Personally, I’m very excited to begin to work with our staff, our students, and the families of Marshfield Junior High.  We will strive to do better every day!

Sincerely,

Floyd Montiel, Principal
